Daniel Weiss (Z\u201dL), 78, of Pompano Beach, FL, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loved ones on shabbat, October 19th, 2024 (17 Tishrei 5785) \u2013 the third day of Sukkot. Per Jewish tradition, passing on this joyous holiday is an honor reserved for the righteous, and grants him a speedy and painless passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A proud Zionist, native of Israel and dual citizen of Israel and the United States, Dan possessed a presence that was larger than life, commanding respect and exuding effortless confidence and self-assuredness. Admired for his incredible strength, resilience, and wisdom, he was a natural-born leader who spoke truthfully and directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born in pre-independence British-ruled Israel to families of Jewish refugees – his father the only member of his immediate family to escape and survive the holocaust – Daniel understood the values of Jewish and familial unity and self-reliance from an early age. His unwavering devotion to family and deep love of Jewish culture defined his life and fueled him throughout. Among his many achievements, including honorable service as a demolition expert in the Israeli Defense Forces and exceptional success in the business world, his greatest pride was always his children and the strength of character he inspired in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite facing cardiovascular illness early in life, Dan never showed weakness, fear, or self-pity. When asked how he felt, even in times of escalating health challenges, he\u2019d reply with characteristic humor and optimism; \u201cstrong like bull\u201d or \u201cnever better\u201d \u2013 words that often rang truer than the assessments of his doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After his first open heart surgery at the age of 40, shortly after the birth of his son, David, he asked his surgeon if he\u2019d make it to his son\u2019s bar mitzvah. The surgeon matter-of-factly advised him to set his sights on more realistic goals. Time would show that the doctor greatly underestimated Daniel\u2019s resolve, who not only lived to celebrate David’s 39th birthday, but also to father a younger daughter, Karin, and to become a grandfather to his eldest daughter Rinat\u2019s two children, Jordan and Maya, as well as his second eldest daughter Ilanit\u2019s three children, Lee, Tali, and Natalie. Daniel\u2019s longevity and perseverance were testaments to the will of a man determined to remain present for his family, to guide and enrich their lives well beyond what seemed possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though father time remains undefeated, there is something undeniably triumphant in the manner and timing of Daniel\u2019s passing. Having battled three kinds of cancer in his later years, Daniel overcame them all and was found cancer-free just days before his passing due to other complications. He not only outlasted his cancers, but in a period marked by severe threats to Israel\u2019s existence – coinciding with his own mounting health challenges – he also outlived Mohammad Deif, Ismail Hanniyeh, Hassan Nasrallah and Yahyah Sinwar, to his pleasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dan found his truest legacy in the lives he nurtured, and though greatly missed, he will be forever remembered, celebrated and admired by those who had the privilege of living under his wing. We are comforted by the thought that he is finally reunited with the loved ones he has lost over the years, including his first born son, Michael, who died tragically at a young age. Those of us who survive him – his adoring children, grandchildren, sons-in-law, sister, extended family and friends – will continue to carry his memory as a source of inspiration, striving to live lives that would make him proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
